Oscar DOMINGUEZ

Born in 1906, Dominguez is a Spanish Surrealist painter from the Canary Islands who died in 1957 in Paris.

Óscar Domínguez was a fragile and creative character. But he was also provocative and extreme, even violent. In 1938 Victor Brauner lost his left eye as he tried to intervene in a fight between Domínguez and the painter Esteban Francés.

Domínguez moved to Paris in 1926 and started painting at the age of 29. His first surrealist paintings date from 1932. He joined the surrealist group in 1934 and although he left it in the 1940, he would consider himself a surrealist until the time of his death.

From 1934 to 1940 Domínguez showed extraordinary inventiveness. He often used the technique of decalcomania.

After the war, Domínguez lost the thread of his work. He committed suicide in 1957.
